The botanical watercolours featured in this calendar were painted by artists employed by the Singapore Botanic Gardens: Chan York Chye, Charles de Alwis, D.N. Choudhury and Juraimi bin Samsuri. The first painters to be employed by the Gardens were appointed by its first director, Henry Ridley (director from 1888 to 1912). These artworks are part of the Gardens’ archives, which include over 2,000 illustrations and paintings. Today it might seem that traditional botanical illustration could be replaced by digital photography. However, watercolour paintings, as well as black ink line drawings, are still very valuable for scientific research – plants may not be available as live specimens or minute details might not be clearly captured by a camera’s lens. A selection of pieces from the Gardens’ collection of botanical art, both old and modern, is showcased in the Botanical Art Gallery.
